Web 2.0 technologies reviewed will include social media sites, new media production, blogs, wikis, and podcasts. Learning theories will be reviewed and linked with best practices for improving teaching and learning. Elementary Education(ELE) 5400-747 Title: Special Issues: Literacy's Top Ten Instructor: Dr. Judith Barbour Semester Hours: 3 Meeting Days: TR 6/9/08 - 7/18/08 plus online sessions Meeting Times: 9:00 am - 11:30 am Description: After learning the latest techniques for doing online research, the class will develop a list of the most renowned and respected leaders in the many areas of reading instruction, such as vocabulary development, oral reading fluency, beginning reading, and remediation for older students. From their research the class will develop a list of the top ten leaders in literacy education. Each of these experts will be examined in depth to determine how his or her philosophy, insights, and recommendations can be applied in our own classrooms in order to help our students reach their full potential in reading. Elementary Education(ELE) 5700-747 Title: Special Issues: Discover Math Strategies for Children PK-3 Instructor: Dr. Sham'ah Md-Yunus Semester Hours: 3 Meeting Days: 06/30 - 07/04/08 MTWRF Meeting Times: 9:00 am - 3:00 pm Description: This course is intended to provide PK-3 teachers with new strategies to teach mathematics to young children. This new strategy is based on the heuristic approach in mathematical problem solving. Participants will be actively involved in hands-on and group activities with integration of an excursion experience. They will develop math projects which include lessons, activities, and manipulatives for using this strategy in their classrooms. English(ENG) 5585-747 Title: Eastern Illinois Writing Project Summer Institute Instructor: Robin Murray and Mary Catherine St. John Semester Hours: 6 Meeting Days: 7/7 - 7/31/2008 MTWR Meeting Times: 9:00 am - 3:00 pm Description: This workshop is designed to offer teachers of all disciplines and grade levels (preK-college) an opportunity to experience a summer institute associated with the National Writing Project through a variety of classroom writing and activities and teaching opportunities. Health Studies(HST) 4988-747 Title: Promoting Health and Wellness for Children Instructor: Lauri DeRuiter-Willems Semester Hours: 2 Meeting Days: 6/13, 6/14, 6/27, 6/28/2008 Meeting Times: Friday 5:00 pm-10:00 pm; Saturday 8:00 am-5:00 pm Description: This class is designed to assist elementary school teachers in development of knowledge and skills necessary to incorporate comprehensive school health in a K-6 setting. Teachers will have tools to document and gather data as evidence of wellness policy compliance. Teachers will create activities and lesson plans that may be used in everyday classroom situations. These will incorporate several health concepts included in the comprehensive school health program models as well as those included in the federally mandated wellness policies. Health Studies(HST) 4998-747 Title: Current Health Topics for Teachers Instructor: Anita Sego Semester Hours: 3 Meeting Days: June 9 - July 18, 2008 Meeting Times: Description: Study of special topics in Health Education with variable course content geared towards teachers. Intensive study of topics through readings, reports, and group discussions. This summer’s course will include asthma, blood borne pathogens, and allergies in the school setting as well as school plans and regulations regarding those health topics. May be repeated for credit if different topics are taught. Mathematics(MAT) 5591-747 Title: Advanced Study of Thinking and Reasoning Important to Teaching Mathematics Instructor: Dr. Joan Henn Semester Hours: 2 Meeting Days: 6/30 - 7/11/2008 MTWRF Meeting Times: 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm Description: Advanced strategies for promoting thinking and reasoning skills for teaching mathematics will be presented. Participants will learn how games, puzzles and related activities promote the acquisition of mathematics concepts. Mathematics(MAT) 5810-747 Title: Fractions in the Elementary/Middle Grades Instructor: Dr. Rick Anderson Semester Hours: 3 Meeting Days: 6/9 - 6/27/2008 MTWRF Meeting Times: 3:00 pm - 5:30 pm Description: Examinations of the foundations of fraction concepts and procedures, rational number learning and understanding, and elementary/middle school students’ thinking about fractions. Methods, materials, and activities for the classroom. Kinesiology and Sports Studies(PED) 5100-747 Title: Positive Behavior Management in Physical Education Instructor: Dr. Deborah Wolf Semester Hours: 1 Meeting Days: 6/20-6/21/2008 Meeting Times: Friday 5:00 pm-9:00 pm; Saturday 9:00 am - 6:00 pm Description: Specific behavior management techniques designed for Physical Education will be analyzed. The student will evaluate methods of preventing behavior problems using a proactive approach to behavior management in an activity setting. Kinesiology and Sports Studies(PED) 5586-747 Title: Advanced Study of Strength and Conditioning Principles for High School Aged Athletes Instructor: Robert Sipes Semester Hours: 3 Meeting Days: 6/16, 6/17, 6/23, 6/24, 6/30, 7/1 plus online Meeting Times: 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm Description: Study of the theoretical and applied research on contemporary methods of strength training and conditioning principles, focusing on the research for high school aged athletes. Using research, the participants will design a sport-specific program and provide an analysis of the programs strengths based on theoretical principles. Methods will involve discussion, exercise participation, group work, and independent projects. Kinesiology and Sports Studies(PED) 5587-747 Title: Theoretical and Applied Principles of Injury Prevention and Management Techniques for Use with High School Athletes Instructor: Robert Sipes Semester Hours: 1 Meeting Days: 6/13 - 6/14/2008 Meeting Times: Friday 5:00 pm - 10:00 pm; Saturday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Description: This course will focus on the theories and rationale for using various taping, wrapping, and bracing techniques. The student will synthesize the research to support these techniques and analyze the principles for selecting and applying the appropriate treatment for injuries commonly seen in high school aged athletes. Methods will involve multimedia presentations, research discussions, practical skill participation, and case-based scenarios. Kinesiology and Sports Studies(PED) 5588-747 Title: Sports Cinema as Teaching Tool Instructor: Dr. Scott Crawford Semester Hours: 1 Meeting Days: 6/20 - 6/21/2008 Meeting Times: Friday 5:00 pm - 10:00 pm; Saturday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Description: A selection of film material is analyzed – Hollywood feature films to standard documentaries - and key elements are indicated and suggested as exciting portals to illuminate and energize teaching and coaching in the school setting. Kinesiology and Sports Studies(PED) 5589-747 Title: Sports Sociology and Strategies for Addressing Deviance, Violence, Race and Minority Conflict Instructor: Dr. Scott Crawford Semester Hours: 1 Meeting Days: 7/11 - 7/12/2008 Meeting Times: Friday 5:00 pm - 10:00 pm; Saturday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Description: This course will explore contemporary readings on deviance, violence, race and minorities in the sphere of sport. By discussion, debate, group project and role play, paradigms will be created to suggest educational measures to combat and confront the alarming level of egregious behaviors in these societal areas. Special Education(SPE) 5132-747 Title: Classroom Assessments and Curriculum Adaptations that Work Instructor: Dr. Joy Russell and Ms. Rebecca Fogarty Semester Hours: 2 Meeting Days: 6/13, 6/17, 6/20, 6/24/2008 Meeting Times: 8:30 am - 3:30 pm Description: NCLB holds teachers accountable for ALL students’ progress in the general education curriculum. This often presents great challenges for general and special educators. This course will provide participants with an overview of current tools teachers can use to screen their entire class, guide instruction and document student progress. Additionally, specific instructional strategies and accommodations will be presented. Participants will understand how to use assessment results to determine not only which students need adapted curriculum but which adaptations are most effective.
