CASH AWARD FOR STUDENT
The Darwin Day Committee is please to accept entries from students interested in competing for the 2013 Stephen Jay Gould Award. The competition for this award is open to all students, undergraduate and graduate, regardless of their department and major.

Charles Darwin is often cited as an example of a person whose ideas “revolutionized” the way we view and understand our world. The topic to be addressed in essays submitted for the 2013 Stephen Jay Gould Award is "the impact of Darwin’s theory of evolution on particular academic fields of inquiry."

In your paper, you must address how Darwin's ideas, specifically those on evolution and natural selection, have impacted a particular discipline (e.g., sociology, political science, economics, biology, chemistry, philosophy, etc.). If you prefer, you may also include more than one discipline to broaden the scope of your paper. The paper must focus on the effect (such as causing or influencing a paradigm shift within a discipline) of Darwin's ideas on an academic discipline, not simply iterate a description of the particulars of Darwin's theory.

Submit the following items to the Darwin Day Committee in the Department of Biological Sciences' main office (Room 2070, Life Sciences Building): one typed, double-spaced copy of your paper, and a letter of nomination from an Eastern Illinois University faculty member that supports the quality of your paper. The submission deadline is noon on Monday, Jan. 28.

BOOTH LIBRARY AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN STUDENT RESEARCH AND CREATIVITY
The “Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creativity” program promotes and recognizes excellence in student research. The awards program encourages students to utilize the wealth of information available at Booth Library to enhance their studies. These awards are not intended to duplicate or replace any other standing campus awards. Selected entries will become a part of Booth Library's Student Research and Creativity Collection.

The Booth Library “Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creativity” program is open to all Eastern Illinois University students. Each award consists of a certificate and a cash prize (up to $300). Certificates of Merit or Honorable Mention may be presented to selected additional entries.

The 2013 guidelines and application form can be found on Booth Library’s website here. Entries should be delivered to the Administration Office, Room 4700, Booth Library, no later than March 18, 2013. Recipients will be selected by April 3, 2013, and the winners will be announced during National Library Week, April 14-20, 2013. Works submitted for competition must have been completed within the last 12 months.

EIU PARENTS CLUB SCHOLARSHIP
Applications are being sought for the EIU Parents Club Scholarship. The scholarship recipient shall be enrolled and a full-time student at EIU for the Fall 2013 semester. Applicants must have at least an overall 2.0 grade point average and must have earned 12 or more credit hours from EIU. Selection of the scholarship recipients will be made by the EIU Parents Club Scholarship Committee, based on financial need, academic achievement and community involvement.

The online application form is available on the Parents Club website. Completed applications with required documentation must be submitted no later than 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, to the Office of Student Programs, Room 3065.

FINGERPRINTING
All students scheduled to student teach in Fall 2013 must have a Criminal Background Investigation run through the Illinois State Police, based on fingerprinting. A fingerprint technician from Accurate Biometrics will be on campus on selected dates during Spring 2013. The following dates have been scheduled: Jan. 16 (8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.); Jan. 22 (10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.); Jan. 30, Feb. 5, 14, 20, 26 (8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.); March 6 (8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.); March 27 (10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.); April 9 (1 to 5 p.m.); and April 23 (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.). PRE-PLACEMENT MEETINGS
Pre-placement interviews for all Fall 2013 student teachers will be held on campus Thursday, Jan. 31, in the University Ballroom and the Student Teaching Suite. All students planning to student teach Fall 2013 must meet with their assigned coordinator during this time. Registration is required by signing up in the Student Teaching Office (2418 Buzzard). Registration dates are Jan. 14-18. Fingerprinting sign-up lists will also be available (in hallway at Student Teaching Dept. entrance) for student appointments.

UNIVERSITY ADMISSION TO TEACHER EDUCATION MEETINGS
Students must attend a meeting to formally apply for University Admission to Teacher Education and to initiate the selection process. The College of Education and Professional Studies schedules meetings each semester. The required formal application form is distrubuted and collected at the meetings, and the rules and regulations concerning selection, admission to and retention in teacher education are explained. Students who have not previously applied must attend a meeting.

The follow meetings are available Spring Semester 2013 to initiate the process: Tuesday, Jan. 29 (6-7 p.m.); Monday, Feb. 18 (5-6 p.m.); Thursday, March 28 (7-8 p.m.); and Wednesday, April 10 (6-7 p.m.). Registration is NOT required. All meetings are held in 1501 Buzzard Hall.

PEER LEADERS SOUGHT FOR UNIVERSITY FOUNDATIONS
Students who will be juniors or seniors (earned at least 60 hours) in Fall 2013 are encouraged to apply to be a peer leader for University Foundations, Eastern's freshman seminar course. Peer leaders must have a 3.0 GPA at the time of application, maintain that GPA through the Fall '13 semester, be active on campus, and interested in teaching and mentoring freshmen. Peer Leaders must be available for training on May 3 and Aug. 14, 2013. Peer leaders are paired with an instructor; courses are taught for 50 minutes twice a week between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Applications are due by March 5. SECONDARY EDUCATION AND FOUNDATIONS SCHOLARSHIPS
Secondary Education and Foundations scholarship applications for the 2013/2014 academic year are now available on the departmental website.

The following scholarships will be awarded: Thomas R. Drury Scholarship (graduate students pursuing a career in education), Alice Groff Pennybacker Scholarship (full-time students seeking secondary certification with a 2.5 minimum GPA; preference given to Lawrence County graduates), Secondary Education Telefund Scholarship (undergraduate secondary education students seeking teacher certification with 3.0 minimum GPA, or graduate students with a 3.5 minimum GPA), Errett and Mazie Warner Presidential Award (graduate/undergraduate students pursuing a career in education with a minimum GPA of 3.0), Moler-Austin Scholarship (undergraduate education students with at least 60 semester hours and a 3.0 minimum GPA; preference given to English majors and Coles County graduates), and the Lou and Mary Kay Hencken Scholarship (full-time student with at least 60 hours and a minimum 2.75 GPA; preferably a CTE major; must be from Coles, Douglas, St. Clair, Macoupin or Montgomery counties, and must reside in university housing).

Applications for these scholarships are also available in 2147 Buzzard Hall. The deadline to turn in applications and any additional required documentation is 4:30 p.m. on March 8, 2013.

MCKENNA SECONDARY EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP
Applications are currently being accepted for the McKenna Secondary Education Scholarship. Eligible applicants include full-time junior- or senior-level students who are enrolled in the field of English or history and who are pursuing secondary teaching certification. Applicants must be currently enrolled in or have completed at least one education course required for secondary teaching certification and shall have a 3.1 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Applicants shall have demonstrated an interest in research either in his/her major field or in secondary education. Financial need is not considered. Applications, along with a letter of recommendation from a professor in the applicant’s field of study, should be sent to the Office of Financial Aid, attention to Christine Edwards, no later than Feb. 8, 2013. STANDARD COMMENCEMENT AND DEADLINES
To All Advisers:
Commencement ceremonies are offered at the conclusion of the fall and spring terms. There is no summer term commencement ceremony. The standard commencement ceremony in which a student may participate is the ceremony at the conclusion of the term when all degree requirements are completed or a term of choice after all degree requirements are completed.

Deadlines: The fall deadline is the first Tuesday in November. The spring deadline is the Wednesday after Spring Break. The application deadlines specific to each term are available at the Office of the Registrar’s web page.

Certification for Graduation
Participation in a commencement ceremony does not signify completion of a degree. No student will be certified for graduation and awarded a degree and diploma until the appropriate certifying dean has provided the Office of the Registrar with official verification of the completion of all degree requirements. See Internal Governing Policy 50 for additional details.

REACH SCHOLARSHIP NOW AVAILABLE FOR FALL 2013 SEMESTER
REACh is pleased to announce the REACh Your Goals Scholarship Program for the Fall 2013 term. This program is designed to assist the growing number of adult learners who are returning to college. REACh scholarships may be used toward the cost of attendance at your institution as determined by the financial aid department.

All applications must be postmarked no later than April 1. Incomplete applications and those received after the deadline will not be considered. Up to four $1,500 scholarships will be awarded. If you are selected as a recipient, the award payment will be made to your institution’s Office of Financial Aid in August 2013. Recipients of the REACh Your Goals Scholarship Program will be informed by May 15, 2013, and will be invited to attend our annual conference and awards presentation to be held June 2013.

PARTICIPATION IN COMMENCEMENT CEREMONIES BY EXCEPTION
Definition: An exception is a request to participate in a commencement ceremony in a term that precedes completion of degree requirements. Commencement ceremonies are offered at the conclusion of the fall and spring terms. There is no summer term commencement ceremony. Requests to participate in commencement ceremonies by exception may be granted according to the following guidelines:
a) Students able to complete all of their degree requirements by the end of the summer term may be granted permission to participate in the preceding spring commencement ceremony.
b) Students with only student teaching, internship or practicum to be completed may be granted permission to participate in the commencement ceremony preceding their final term.

Procedures: Complete a standard graduation application for the term in which you will complete all degree requirements. Complete the Request for Participation in Commencement by Exception form prior to the deadline specific to the semester in which the earlier ceremony will take place. Forms are available online through the Academic Affairs and Campus Advising Network (CAN) websites. Completed forms must be returned to the appropriate college or school. Students who qualify and are approved for participation in an earlier ceremony should access the Commencement Office web site for information on ordering a cap and gown and related activities associated with participation in commencement.

Deadlines: The deadlines to apply for Request for Participation in Commencement by Exception are: Fall deadline is the first Tuesday in November. Spring deadline is the Wednesday after Spring Break. The graduation application deadlines are the same as those for participating in commencement by the standard procedures.
