FACUTY DEVELOPMENT PARTNERSHIP GRANTS
A pilot grant program -- Faculty Partnership Grants -- is designed to foster the development of interdisciplinary teaching and research projects and faculty partnerships. Grants will be made available to EIU faculty with the goals of fostering collegiality, forming partnerships, collaborating between scholars/teachers and reaching a broader audience than Faculty Development Support Grants. An application and more information is available here. The deadline for FY13 Partnership Grant Applications is 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2012. For more information, please contact the Faculty Development office at 581-7051 or by email at facdev@eiu.edu.

FACULTY READING GROUPS
The Office of Faculty Development seeks to encourage interdisciplinary conversations about teaching and academic life. To this end, we have acquired two sets of books for the 2012-2013 school year that we trust will provide starting points for provocative and enriching discussions: "The Courage to Teach: Exploring the Inner Landscape of a Teacherís Life" (Parker Palmer) in the fall semester and "Academically Adrift: Limited Learning on College Campuses" (Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa) during Spring 2013.

Our office will provide copies of "Courage to Teach" to each faculty member who wishes to participate in a reading group this fall. Please contact us at 217-581-7051 or email facdev@eiu.edu to sign up by Friday, Sept. 7, 2012. The Faculty Development office will coordinate a time and location for interested faculty. If you wish to participate in a reading group focused on "Academically Adrift" for next semester, please contact us at facdev@eiu.edu, as well, by Nov. 15. We welcome suggestions of titles for future semesters.

MAGNA COMMONS NOW AVAILABLE THROUGH FACULTY DEVELOPMENT
In Spring 2011, Faculty Development conducted a series of talk-backs with each of the academic colleges at EIU, and one recurring theme was the demand for just-in-time teaching and learning resources and a best practices repository. Additionally, faculty requested an online space for shared resources that could be easily accessed at any time.

Eastern Illinois University now has a campus-wide site license and one-year subscription to Magna Commons, an online faculty development resource which provides on-demand professional development for faculty development, just-in-time teaching and learning, group meetings and discussion groups.

Magna Commons offers a wide variety of full-length online seminars with new titles added monthly, addressing critical issues facing faculty today, including grading and feedback, student engagement, online teaching and learning, etc. These programs feature leading educators and consultants delivering thought-provoking, content-rich presentations. The subscription also includes supplemental materials custom-designed to help faculty implement strategies, handouts, in-depth facilitator's discussion guides and complete transcripts of each program. To access this resource, please contact the Faculty Development office at 581-7051 or at facdev@eiu.edu. Sign-up instructions will be provided.
