Professional Development

VISITING SCHOLAR MICHAEL WESCH
On Thursday, Jan. 10, Faculty Development and the Center for Academic Technology Support are pleased to launch a collaborative, half-day symposium that promotes excellence in teaching and learning on Eastern’s campus. We see this as an opportunity to learn from and discuss pedagogical practices and issues with EIU faculty who are actively engaged in examining teaching and learning in their disciplines. This conversation will be sparked by a visiting scholar, Michael Wesch, who will give the opening plenary talk. There will be a break out session following his presentation and then a working lunch in which faculty will have the opportunity to discuss with each other the concepts Wesch introduces.

Dubbed "the Explainer" by Wired magazine, Michael Wesch is a cultural anthropologist exploring the effects of new media on society and culture. His videos on culture, technology, education and information have been viewed by millions, translated in more than 15 languages, and are frequently featured at international film festivals and major academic conferences worldwide. Wesch has won several major awards for his work, including a Wired Magazine Rave Award, and he was recently named an Emerging Explorer by National Geographic. He has also won several teaching awards, including the 2008 CASE/Carnegie U.S. Professor of the Year for Doctoral and Research Universities.

Faculty are encouraged to bring their students to the plenary talk. Lunch will be provided for faculty who register. A detailed schedule can be found here. Registration is available here. For more information, please contact 581-7051 or email facdev@eiu.edu.

D2L INSTRUCTORS: MAKE YOUR FALL COURSE(S) INACTIVE
If you used D2L during Fall 2012, you need to make your course(s) inactive when you no longer want the students to access the course. Go to your course and select "Edit Course" > "Course Offering Information," then remove the check mark next to "Course is Active," then select "SAVE" at the bottom. In D2L, instructors have complete control over when students are able to access their courses.

D2L UPGRADED TO VERSION 10.1
On Dec. 18, D2L was upgraded from version 10 to version 10.1. Although it is not a major upgrade, there are some differences.

This page from D2L has a list of the main changes. One of the major enhancements is the drag-and-drop file upload. You can now drag files directly from your desktop (or other location) and drop the files into your D2L course. After logging into D2L, you will notice other differences, as well. The content area has changed. Any content previously uploaded is still there, but the interface just looks different. The HTML editor is slightly different, as well.

If you need assistance with D2L, you can register for a workshop or hands-on training session here. You can also contact the CATS Training Center at 581-8452 to schedule an appointment.

D2L SELF-DIRECTED TRAINING VERSION 10.1
The online self-directed training course for Desire2Learn has now been upgraded to reflect the changes in D2L Version 10.1. The changes are reflected throughout the training, as well as in the "What's New in Version 10.1" content section. The D2L Self-Directed Training is available as a course through Desire2Learn. All instructors in D2L now have access to the course automatically. To access the course, log in to D2L here. On the “My Courses” widget on the “MyHome” page, select the "student" role. Then, select the title of the course (D2L Self-Directed Training) from the list. The course is available for those teaching a course using D2L. If you are an instructor and you do not have the training course on your course list, contact Julie Lockett at jalockett@eiu.edu.
