For several years, Eastern Illinois University has used a 4.5-day summer workweek for many areas on campus to promote energy efficiency and save approximately $500,000 in utility costs. For this summer, the administration again asks employees, whose work assignments allow, to compress their normal five-day workweek into a 4.5-day workweek.

Campus-wide summer office hours will be in effect from Monday, May 6, through Friday, Aug. 9, excluding the holiday weeks of Tuesday, May 28, through Friday, May 31, and Monday, July 1, through Friday, July 5. When summer office hours are in effect, all offices must be open Monday through Thursday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. and on Friday from 8 a.m. until noon. All administrative offices (and others where possible) will remain open during the lunch hour, Monday through Thursday. Because of ongoing operational needs, offices including, but not limited to, the President's Office, Admissions, Financial Aid, Bursar's/Cashier's Office, University Police, Booth Library and the Renewable Energy Center, will keep regular business hours and remain open on Friday afternoons.

Holidays will be observed on Monday, May 27, for Memorial Day and Thursday, July 4, for Independence Day. For the holiday weeks of May 2831 and July 15 (excluding July 4), all offices must be open for regular business hours from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

Classes scheduled to meet on Friday afternoons will be relocated to buildings where the air conditioning will remain on. Employees are to work with supervisors to ensure that a 37.5-hour workweek is accomplished. Each office is to change voice mail, signs and other public communication to reflect its summer hours. Regular business hours will resume on Monday, Aug. 12. Questions may be directed to the Human Resources office.

Nominations are now being accepted for the EIU Superior Performance Award. Up to 10 awards of $500 each will be given to honor outstanding employees. This award is for non-negotiated civil service and administrative and professional (A&P) employees with five or more years of service with EIU.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Nick Allen, a 21-year-old sophomore pre-business major from Chicago, who died Friday, April 19. Mr. Allen was a student leader who was very involved in all aspects of campus and community life. He was an active member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, Student Government, Interfraternity Council, Residence Hall Association, New Student Programs, Delta Sigma Pi Business Fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity, and Lambda Alpha Delta. He also served as Billy through the Department of Athletics.

More than 600 persons attended a memorial service held Friday, April 19, at the Wesley United Methodist Church, Charleston.

Eastern's Board of Trustees elected new officers at its Friday, April 19, meeting. Each will serve a one-year term.

Those elected include Joseph Dively, chairperson; Kristopher Goetz, vice chairperson; Rene Hutchinson, secretary; and Robert Webb, member pro tem.
