Transcription / Captioning Student Assistant
This position oversees transcription & captioning of videos that are intended for public viewing and classroom use.
1 Position currently available | Summer or Fall 2013

Location: CATS office, EIU, Charleston, IL 61920

Employment Status: Part time (SAs: up to 21 hrs/wk in Fall/Spring; up to 28 hrs/wk in Summer)
Project Supervisors: Pete Grant
Terms: Contract
Period: Minimum 1 year

Job Summary:

The Center for Academic Technology support (CATS), is a campus resource center for a variety of services and technological solutions. CATS is committed to supporting and promoting all academic departments in the use of information and communication technologies for teaching and learning at Eastern Illinois University.

CATS provides digital & multimedia assistance and support to Eastern Illinois University faculty, staff, students, departments and programs. These services include video production, captioning, photography, digital printing & publications, and other media-related needs.

This position is responsible for assisting in the captioning of media for CATS and the campus.

Job Functions: 

  1. Assisting with the captioning process of media to meet state accessibility standards for the classroom and external audiences
  2. Transcribing videos, grammar checking transcripts, timecode-synching transcripts to videos
  3. Coordinating & communicating with media production supervisors, video editors and caption specialists to ensure satisfactory completion of assigned caption projects
  4. Researching methods, software, hardware and best practices to help refine and expedite our captioning processes
  5. Assist with the training of new student workers in the captioning process
  6. Assist with the project load of new student workers in the captioning process
  7. Act as a consultant to faculty, staff, students on captioning-related issues
  8. Conduct and assist multimedia training and information sessions for faculty, staff, and students as it relates to captioning or other multimedia technologies.
  9. Possibly some filming when extra help is needed
  10. Learn new technologies
  11. Assist GA assigned to supervise Transcription/Captioning
  12. Perform other duties as assigned

Job Requirements:

  • A knowledge of or experience with specific digital & multimedia software/hardware or other skills mentioned above, or the ability to learn these technologies quickly
  • 3.0 GPA in undergraduate work
  • Some relevant work experience is preferred but not required
  • Good written and oral communication
  • Attention to detail
  • Affinity for technology
  • Adaptable / flexible to the changing needs of the campus and technology
  • Good time management skills: the ability to work under a deadline and meet deadlines in a timely manner
  • The ability to troubleshoot
  • Demonstration of project management skills or the ability to learn these skills
  • The ability to work with multiple projects simultaneously and the flexibility to transition back and forth between projects
  • Good organization skills
  • Appreciable inter-personal skills

  • Ability to work on projects without close supervision
  • Able to occasionally work nights & weekends
