Peter Spiers has authored a new book entitled Master Class: Living Longer, Stronger, and Happier. Master Class reverse-engineers the lifestyle of some of the most hale and hearty older people in the world, the participants in Road Scholar’s educational travel programs, and lays out a holistic program, targeted at people on the cusp of retirement, for a life of engagement, enrichment and fulfillment. Master Classidentifies 25-30 core activities to which Masters are drawn, and explains why their blend of socializing, moving, creating, and thinking are a recipe for both successful aging and cognitive health. Master Classcarefully integrates the latest in academic and internal Road Scholar research, but the testimony of the Masters themselves makes the most compelling case for the lifestyle, and will motivate readers to get on the road to becoming Masters themselves. This is a Road Scholar presentation.

Location: SBLHS Education Center, Lincoln/Adams/Washington Rooms
Presented By: Peter Spiers
Register by: June 19, 2013

In 1932, the U.S. Public Health Service began a 40-year observational study of untreated latent syphilis among the black men of Macon County, Alabama. These men and their families were deceived about the intent of the study, and were denied treatment even after penicillin was available. The social and racial injustices of Tuskegee should alert us to the continuing inequities among vulnerable populations in health care settings today.

Presented By: Linda Ruholl
Register By: July 3, 2013

Wednesday, September 04, 2013 - Islamic Gardens: The Meaning of Beauty

Dr. D. Fairchild Ruggles of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, with additional appointments to the School of Architecture, Program in Art History, Women's Studies Program, and Medieval Studies Program. She trained as an historian of Islamic art and architecture, and her first body of research examined the medieval Andalusian landscape as a complex working system in which culture and ideology were inseparable from agricultural practice and economy, water management, and systems of representation. She is the author of two award-winning books on gardens: Gardens, Landscape, and Vision in the Palaces of Islamic Spain (2000), and Islamic Gardens and Landscapes (2008).

The Center for the Humanities presents Dr. Ruggles' lecture entitled 'Islamic Gardens: The Meaning of Beauty'. Her talk will expand on the ideas raised by the 2013 EIUReads! selection, The Submission by Amy Waldman, which discusses the selection of a Ground Zero Memorial.
