Contemporary works in ceramics, wood, papier maché and paintings, including many works relating to The Day of the Dead by noted Mexican folk artists.  Also, vintage pieces from the Tarble and private collections.

LOCATION/HOURS:

The Tarble Arts Center, located on South Ninth Street at Cleveland Avenue on the EIU campus, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.  It is closed Mondays and holidays.

Admission to exhibitions and events is free unless otherwise noted.

November 08, 2009 - Exhibit: 'Almost Alice: New Illustrations of Wonderland by Maggie Taylor' (Oct. 24 through Dec. 20)

Fantastic surreal digital prints made using sources ranging from snapshots to 19th-century daguerreotypes to illustrate the book, Lewis Carroll's 'Alice's Adventures In Wonderland: Illustrated By Maggie Taylor (2008, Modernbook Gallery).'

Taylor holds a BA in philosophy from Yale University and an MFA in photography from the University of Florida.  In 1996, after more than 10 years as a still-life photographer, Taylor began using the computer to create her images.  Her images are in numerous collections, including The Art Museum, Princeton University, and the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University.  This exhibition was organized by the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art, University of Florida, Gainesville (Tom Southall, curator).

November 08, 2009 - Memorial Service for Jackie Moore, Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach

The Eastern Illinois University athletic family is saddened today as assistant women’s basketball coach Jackie Moore passed away Wednesday night at Sarah Bush Regional Hospital. Out of respect for the Moore Family additional details are not available at this time.

A memorial service for Moore is planned for 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Lantz Arena.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Moore family at this time,” said EIU athletic director Barbara Burke. “Jackie was a great young person with a bright future ahead of her. She will be dearly missed. Out of respect for Jackie, her family and friends, we have cancelled all athletic contests for this weekend.”

Moore, 28, was in her third season as a member of Coach Brady Sallee’s coaching staff.  She was a native of Windsor, Ontario and played her collegiate basketball at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tenn.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to EIU Women's Basketball in Jackie Moore's name will be accepted at Sunday's memorial service. Contributions can also be mailed to:

November 10, 2009 - On-campus H1N1 Vaccination Clinic

Eligible EIU students and faculty/staff will have their first on-campus opportunity to receive the H1N1 vaccine on Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 10 and 11.

H1N1 vaccination clinics will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days in the Lantz Concourse.  People at high risk for the H1N1 flu and seeking to be immunized should enter the building via the north door (near the Student Recreation Center entrance).  There is no charge, but those wishing to receive the vaccine should bring their Panther Card ID.

Dr. Sheila Baker, EIU medical director, said those receiving the vaccines should be from one or more of the high-risk groups:
• People between the ages of 10 and 24 years (no pediatric dosages available at this clinic);
• Pregnant women;
• Health care and emergency medical services personnel;
• People who live with or provide care for infants younger than 6 months; and
• People 25 through 64 years of age who have certain chronic medical conditions (e.g., asthma; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; liver disorders; heart disease; diabetes; cancer; neurological disorders such as epilepsy, cerebral palsy, brain or spinal cord injuries; neuromuscular disorders such as muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis; and weakened immune systems, such as people with HIV and AIDS or who are on medications that weaken the immune system).

The priority groups are established based on current U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Illinois Department of Public Health guidelines.

EIU Health Services continues to update its H1N1 Flu Information Web site with general information about the H1N1 flu, tips on how to prevent contracting H1N1, and regular campus updates from Dr. Baker.

November 10, 2009 - Wind Symphony: 'Call to Duty' -- In Honor of Veterans Past and Present

In honor of Veterans Day, the Eastern Illinois University Wind Symphony will salute veterans past and present with 'The Call to Duty' at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10.

All active-duty military members and veterans wearing all or part of their uniforms or VFW regalia will be admitted free to the concert, which will be held in the Doudna Fine Arts Center's Dvorak Concert Hall.

All Central Illinois veterans who have been killed in action, or who served but have since passed, will be acknowledged during the concert. To avoid omissions, community members are asked to provide the veterans' names and hometowns, as well as the name of the wars in which they served, by Nov. 6, via e-mail (mdallen@eiu.edu) or phone message (217-581-2799).

A 'To Honor, Thank and Remember' display will be set up in the Doudna's Concourse, where community members may display pictures, letters and other items either from their own service or in honor of another who has served. Items may be placed before the concert and retrieved either after the concert or at the end of the week. The display will be available for public viewing through Nov. 13.

The EIU Wind Symphony, led by conductor Milton Allen, will perform several musical selections:

·         Those who have served will be asked to stand during the 'Armed Forces Salute.'

·         French composer Darius Milhaud's 'Suite Francaise,' dedicated to the Americans who fought with the Allies and the French Underground for the liberation of France during World War II, will be illustrated by images provided by Dan Crews.

·         David Gillingham's 'Heroes, Lost and Fallen' is the first piece to memorialize those lost in the Vietnam conflict -- and to pay tribute to those who survived.

·         Jerker Johansson's 'The Missing Man' and Samuel Hazo's 'Each Time You Tell Their Story' will provide the back drop as those who were lost are honored.

Tickets -- $$5 each, or $$3 for EIU students -- may be purchased in the Doudna Fine Arts Center box office (217-581-3110) from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, or one hour before each performance. Tickets may also be reserved via e-mail at doudnatix@eiu.edu.

The Doudna Fine Arts Center, a division of EIU's College of Arts and Humanities, is located one block west of Ninth Street at Garfield Avenue in Charleston.
