SUMMARY:What Does Columbus Day Mean Now?
DESCRIPTION:Rolena Adorno studies Colonial Spanish American literature and history and the nineteenth century origins of Hispanism in the United States.  She was appointed by President Barack Obama in November 2009 to serve a five-year term for the National Endowment for the Humanities and is currently the Chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Yale University.  Her publications include: Guáman Poma: Writing and Resistance in Colonial Peru (1986), Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vace: His Account, His Life, and the Expedition of Pánfilo de Narváez (1999), and The Polemics of Possession in Spanish American Narrative (2007). DESCRIPTION:Dr. D. Fairchild Ruggles of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, with additional appointments to the School of Architecture, Program in Art History, Women's Studies Program, and Medieval Studies Program. She trained as an historian of Islamic art and architecture, and her first body of research examined the medieval Andalusian landscape as a complex working system in which culture and ideology were inseparable from agricultural practice and economy, water management, and systems of representation. She is the author of two award-winning books on gardens: Gardens, Landscape, and Vision in the Palaces of Islamic Spain (2000), and Islamic Gardens and Landscapes (2008).\nThe Center for the Humanities presents Dr. Ruggles' lecture entitled 'Islamic Gardens: The Meaning of Beauty'. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Daiva Markelis is an associate professor of English at Eastern Illinois University, where she teaches creative writing, composition and rhetoric.  Her creative nonfiction has appeared in The Chicago Tribune Sunday Magazine, The Chicago Reader, Crab Orchard Review, Women and Language, Agora, and Fourth River.  Her work has been nominated and received recognition in such competitions as the 2007 Arts and Letters competition in creative nonfiction, and the 2009 American Literary Review in creative nonfiction.\nHer memoir, White Field, Black Sheep: A Lithuanian-American Life, will be the subject of this year's Center for the Humanities Annual Faculty Speaker Lecture.  The lecture will examine Dr. Markelis's experiences during the 1960s and 1970s growing up in Chicago as a first-generation Lithuanian-American. DESCRIPTION:    \nDr. Barbara King is the Chancellor Professor of Anthropology at the College of William and Mary.  Dr. King began with the study of monkeys and great apes, but in her most recent book, How Animals Grieve, examines the behaviors of elephants, cats, and birds.  Through studying various animals, her research has furthered the premise that animals have deeper emotional relationships than previously thought.  She claims that through the writing of such books, she has, 'brought together my love of animals and my love of anthropology in writing books about what it means to be human.'  Her other works also examine humanness in the context of the animal kingdom, and include such titles as: The Dynamic Dance: Nonvocal Communication in African Great Apes (2004), Evolving God: A Provocative View on the Origins of Religion (2008), and Being With Animals: Why We Are Obsessed with the Furry, Scaly, Feathered Creatures Who Populate Our World (2010). \nThe Center for the Humanities presents Dr. King's lecture entitled 'How Animals Grieve,' as part of the two-year theme 'Authenticity'.    \n  \n\n______________________________\nThis Event Downloaded From a Helios Calendar Powered Site
