The first of Jones’ successes, and the cause of his critical acclaim, this allegorical tale examines the racial tensions of the 1960s, through the actions of a lascivious blond who tries every way she knows to pick up and seduce a decent black youth in a
subway car.
Florence by Alice Childress
This 1950 play by Alice Childress, the fi rst African-American woman to have a play professionally produced play, examines the attitudes of two women, one white – one black, who meet in a train station waiting room in a very small town in the south. Their conversation uncovers the social conflict of racism.
