The Linguists will be shown Thursday, March 10, at 7 p.m. in the Doudna Fine Arts Center Lecture Hall as part of the EIU Humanities Series on Meaningful Work. Please note: Director Seth Kramer and linguist David Harrison will be present to discuss the making of the film and its greater implications.
The Linguists is a hilarious and poignant chronicle of two scientists — David Harrison and Gregory Anderson — racing to document languages on the verge of extinction. Of the world’s 7,000 languages, 40 percent are on their way to extinction, with the last fluent speaker of a language dying once every two weeks. In Siberia, India, and Bolivia, the linguists confront head-on the very forces silencing languages: racism, humiliation, and violent economic unrest.
David and Greg's journey takes them deep into the heart of the cultures, knowledge and communities at risk when a language dies. An official selection of Sundance Film Festival, The Linguists has been featured in Scientific American, The Huffington Post, The Economist, Washington Post, Science, and many other media sources such as Wired.com and the BBC.
