4 p.m. Showing: Hot Coffee (2011)

Susan Saladoff’s documentary Hot Coffee reveals what really happened to Stella Liebeck, the Albuquerque woman who spilled coffee on herself and sued McDonald’s, while exploring how and why the case garnered so much media attention, who funded the effort and to what end. After seeing this film, you will decide who really profited from spilling hot coffee.

6 p.m. Showing: The House is Black (1963)

Set in a leper colony in the north of Iran, female poet and filmmaker Forugh Farrokhzad’s The House is Black juxtaposes 'ugliness,' of which there is much in the world as stated in the opening scenes, with religion and gratitude. The film seamlessly adapts her techniques of poetry to its framing, editing, sound, and narration. At once lyrical and extremely matter-of-fact, devoid of sentimentality or voyeurism yet profoundly humanist, the film offers a view of everyday life in the colony.
