In Dee Rees first feature film, Brooklyn teenager Alike (pronounced ah-lee-kay) juggles conflicting identities and risks friendship, heartbreak, and family in a desperate search for sexual expression. With a flair for poetry and success in her classes, Alike is also quietly but firmly learning to embrace her identity as a lesbian. Despite resistance from her family, Alike strives to get through adolescence with grace, humor, and tenacity – sometimes succeeding, sometimes not, but always moving forward.

In Peruvian filmmaker Claudia Llosa’s Milk of Sorrow, main character Fausta is suffering from an illness called the Milk of Sorrow, a disease transmitted through the breast milk of pregnant women who were abused or raped during or soon after pregnancy, as they were during Peru’s brutal Civil War. While living in constant fear and confusion due to this disease, Fausta must face the sudden death of her mother and cope with the legacy of violence she has inherited.
