Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree required, emphasis in counseling, guidance and counseling, or education is preferred. Experience working in a higher education environment, preferable in an advising capacity. Strong customer service orientation and the ability to relate to a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff.

Position Description: This is a 12 month full-time academic support professional position. The position reports to the direct of the Bachelor of Arts in General Studies Program. The Academic Advisor is responsible for counseling adult students who are investigating or who have been admitted to the Bachelor of Arts in General Studies Degree Program, which includes interpretation of program, university and graduation requirements, assisting with course selection, degree program formation, and academic development. Serve as a mentor to adult students, monitor student progress, and participate in staff development activities. Approximately 20% of this position requires travel to off-campus locations.

Responsibilities:

1.Explain the BGS Program to individuals who inquire about the program.
2. Counsel with adult students who have been admitted to the program to explain the requirements remaining to be met for degree completion.
3.Utilize appreciative advising techniques to help the student understand the strengths they bring to the learning environment and to develop a positive attitude about their ability to be successful.
4. Plan with students an academic program based on the immediate and long range goals of the student.
5. Interpret transfer evaluations from other institutions to the student.
6. Perform preliminary evaluations on unofficial records to help student determine what requirements are left to be completed to meet graduation requirements.
7. Present all options available to students which will enable them to meet their goal of completing a degree.
8. Demonstrate a personal interest in students, discussing with them the major and minor concerns of their educational choices. In this role, the academic advisor provides students with the information necessary to make independent choices after the limitation, alternatives, and consequences involved in the decision are discussed.
9. Monitor student's progress toward degree completion.
10. Provide academic counseling for students who come to the program office without an appointment seeking information or assistance.
11. Correspond with students in regard to academic concerns, utilizing effective oral and written communication skills.
12. Participate in recruitment events for the program.
13. Be flexible in scheduling appointments that more effectively meet the needs of adult students.
14. Be available to travel to off-campus locations to conduct information sessions and advising sessions.
15. Participate in on-going professional development activities.
