About Project WOW

Project WOW is a collaborative school-university project between Eastern Illinois University Department of Early Childhood, Elementary, and Middle Level Education and Carl Sandburg Elementary School.  ELE3340/001, Social Studies Methods for the Elementary and Middle Level School, has been redesigned as a school-based methods course with a commitment to technology integration.  Pre-service teachers enrolled in ELE3340/001 (Judy Barford, instructor) along with children of the third grade classes of Lou Conwell and Kathy Miller, coordinate their efforts throughout the semester to research value-based curriculum with technology support.  Seventy+  participants made up the Lincoln teams for spring semesters 2007, 2008, and 2009, in celebration of the 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial.   In alternate semesters, Project WOW develops various  Heroes curriculums: Wonders of Wisdom. Our theme for fall, 2008 focused on the struggle for freedom in the 1800's, especially the abolitionists, through heroes of freedom.  For the Bicentennial of the great journey west, 2002 - 2006, Project WOW teams studied the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

For Fall, 2009, each of the twelve teams is studying one of America's national parks or historic sites.  Along with Lewis and Clark, the national parks are a Wonders of the Wilderness theme.
