Retiring Professor Feels Gratitude Toward EIU and Community
Much to his mother's chagrin, Alan Baharlou often ran around as a youngster with holes in his pants pockets – the result of his carrying rocks and other sharp items of nature that he found while exploring nearby river beds. “I was always discovering things,” he said. “I loved the different colors and shapes. And being in nature brought me tranquility; it gave me peace. It was my friend.” More than five decades have since passed, and the years have provided the 69-year-old Charleston resident more friends than he could ever count. Many of them – while happy for his good fortune – reluctantly said goodbye as the long-time chair of Eastern Illinois University 's geology-geography department prepared for his retirement. Weber Officially Named Associate VP for Academic Affairs
It’s official: After serving since 2000 as acting associate vice president for academic affairs at Eastern Illinois University, William Weber has assumed the role on a permanent basis. As associate vice president for academic affairs, Weber manages budgetary matters for the division, oversees faculty development and handles student and parent concerns. Sixteen-year Veteran of Facilities Division Named Director
Gary Reed says he’s “honored and very excited” to be named director of Facilities Planning and Management at Eastern Illinois University – a campus he considers “a small city in itself.” The Watson resident and 16-year employee of the institution began his career at Eastern in 1989, when he was named superintendent of utilities. From 2000-2003, he served as assistant to the director and, for the past 19 months, he has served as acting director. [Full Story]

EIU Trustees Approve Hikes in Tuition, Student Fees

EIU Alumnus O'Rourke Appointed to EIU Board of Trustees A former Eastern Illinois University student senator with a long history in state government is the newest member of the EIU Board of Trustees. William O’Rourke of Springfield, a 1974 EIU graduate who still vividly recalls the kindness of then-housing-official Lou Hencken, was appointed to the seat June 16 by Gov. Rod Blagojevich. “I think it’s a wonderful honor,” O’Rourke said. “Eastern was a tremendous place to go to college, and I owe much of what I am today to the education I got there. Nadler Named EIU's Vice President for Student Affairs
The new vice president for student affairs at Eastern Illinois University says if he were to custom design a university with his needs and interests in mind, that university would be EIU. “I can't tell you how impressed I am with the staff, the faculty and the leadership that is in place there,” said Daniel Nadler, who currently serves as associate vice president for student affairs at Tulane University in New Orleans. “I'm so excited about coming to Eastern.” [Full Story]
