Tenure Track Position in Physics

STATUS:

POSITION:

The Physics Department at Eastern Illinois University seeks qualified candidates for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level starting fall semester 2008, subject to available funding.

DATE OF APPOINTMENT:

August 16th, 2008

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The responsibilities of this position include teaching undergraduate lecture and laboratory classes in Physics for majors and non-majors, conducting physics related research involving undergraduates; and assisting with departmental and university service.

QUALIFICATIONS:

At the time of appointment, the qualified candidate must hold, at minimum, a PhD in Physics or a closely related field. The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong commitment to and enthusiasm for undergraduate physics education through classroom teaching and mentorship of undergraduate student research. The successful applicant must be able to develop and maintain an active undergraduate research program. All candidates that have the potential to supplement an existing strength within the department will be considered. An experimental physicist is preferred with particular interest in candidates having significant experience in optics and lasers or radiation/health physics.

THE UNIVERSITY & DEPARTMENT:

Eastern Illinois University is a comprehensive state university in a community of 20,000 in east central Illinois. Enrollment at the university is 11,000. EIU is dedicated to quality teaching in small class settings. Undergraduate physics at Eastern includes options in Physics, Applied Physics, Astronomy, Computational Physics, Engineering Physics, Radiation Physics, and Science with Teacher Certification Specialization in Physics. Major departmental equipment includes a 4 watt CW Ar-ion laser, a 50 J/pulse excimer laser, several nitrogen pumped dye lasers, a 1m monochromator, an X-ray fluorescence system, a thin film deposition system, and an observatory with a 16" computer-controlled telescope. The Department has 9 full time faculty, 30 Physics majors in the various options, and approximately 80 Pre-engineering students.

LOCATION:
Eastern Illinois University is located in Charleston, Illinois approximately 1 hour from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2 hours from Indianapolis, and 2.5 hours from Saint Louis.
