MAC PLUS GAMES

GunShy MahJongg is a simple enough game, sometimes known as TaiPei, where you remove pairs of matching tiles from the edges of the game board. An addictive little no-brainer, this program runs on practically every version of the MacOS (it runs fine on my 512K under System 3.2), and you can even customize the tile and background pictures in ResEdit (the author includes instructions on how to do it). GunShy MahJongg is free.

BlackBox is perhaps my favorite board game, as I owned the original board version from Parker Brothers years ago, and now own DOS, Windows, Newton, and Mac versions. It's a kind of theoretical physics game for points, where you shoot rays into a grid, and find the location of invisible balls by watching how the rays react. Despite that description, it's actually pretty easy to play, and is simple enough to run on a 512K Mac. BlackBox is free

GoMoku is a traditional Japanese game like tic-tac-toe, except you need to get five in a row. Gomoku is another game that has been brought to practically every OS: I've got DOS, Windows, Newton, and Mac versions. It's a one person game -- you play against the computer. GoMoku is free.

Otello is a Mac version of Othello, the board game with black and white chips where you try to fill up more squares than your opponent. This is a little tinkertoy program that probably will run under System 0 -- System 6 is no problem. Otello is postcard ware -- the creator just asks that you send him a postcard (to the address in the "About" window).

GNU Shogi 1.1 is some sort of Asian tile game, but different than MahJongg I guess -- as you can probably tell, I've never sat down and played it. But it seems to run OK under System 6, and like all GNU software, it's absolutely free.

Klondike 4 is the inevitable solitaire game, which every real computer needs to have. It's pretty nice, with little sounds and all, and even runs on my 512K. Klondike 4 is shareware.

GNU Chess

Brickles Plus 2 is an arcade-style video game, basically a clone of Breakout, which is of course just a fancier version of Pong. It runs under System 6 just fine. Brickles is shareware.

Scarab of RA 1.2 is an early version of a little adventure game, where you search for treasure inside a tomb. This early version runs even on a 512K. Scarab of RA is shareware.

Glypha is a really nice-looking little game, which really doesn't have much to it: click frantically on the mouse, and move your little flying beast around as you joust with little harpies in some Egyptian temple. Runs just fine under System 6. Glypha is shareware.

Glider is the old Mac game Glider, where you steer a paper airplane through a house. Runs under System 6. Glider is shareware.

Phrase Craze is a really nice Wheel of Fortune game for the Mac. It has music, sound effects, audience reactions, even a talking Vanna. And all of this runs under System 6. Phrase Craze is shareware.

Village Quest is another adventure game where you wander around and add stuff to your inventory, and I guess solve some puzzle -- I dunno, I've never played it for more than a minute. It has the same frame-by-frame Hypercard feel as Scarab of RA. Runs fine in System 6, maybe even in earlier systems, since there's not much to it. Village Quest is shareware.

MacTuber is Mr. Potato Head for the Mac. The graphics are really nice, and it even has a woman's voice that says whatever part you grab, in case your kid doesn't recognize an eye or a nose. Still, it runs fine under System 6. MacTuber is shareware.
