About Philosophy

Philosophy (literally: “the love of wisdom”) is the oldest academic discipline, originating in ancient Greece around 600 BC.  It includes reflection upon the foundations of science, art, ethics, politics, and religion, and also the critical analysis of belief systems and rational arguments.

The study of philosophy involves issues such as the meaning of human life; the relationship between mind and body; the nature, scope and limits of human knowledge; the nature of ultimate reality.

These investigations include inquiry into other cultures and historical periods, allowing us a better understanding of our own values and beliefs as well as possible alternatives.

Philosophical reflection thus includes the most personal and the most universal questions human beings have ever asked.  For centuries, philosophy has been the cornerstone of Western culture and the founding discipline of higher education.

Goals and Objectives

The Philosophy Department at Eastern Illinois University offers excellent undergraduate education in philosophy.  The department provides a wide range of general education courses and advanced curriculum that is comprehensive, rigorous, and up-to-date.  This curriculum includes the major periods in the history of philosophy, as well as component areas such as the theory of knowledge, the theory of values, and logic.  We also offer courses in contemporary analytic philosophy, Continental European philosophy, and Eastern philosophy.  A departmental honors program is available for majors with a GPA of 3.5 or above.  Our goal is to provide students with a well-rounded education that includes a balance of scholarship, critical thinking, and personal development.

Career Opportunities

The study of philosophy imparts skills and concepts that are applicable to the widest range of vocations and professions.  Studies show that philosophy majors perform at or near the top on standardized tests such as the Law School Admissions Test, the Graduate Management Admissions Test, and the Graduate Record Examination.  Philosophy majors have successful careers in a variety of areas, including education, law, medicine, business, the arts, journalism, publishing, government, and religion.   They also successfully complete advanced degrees in philosophy and other fields.
