On November 14, 2005, ITS began the conversion from an old User ID scheme to a new User ID scheme.
The new scheme will be fmlastname###. In other words first initial/ middle initial/lastname (up to 15 characters)/###
(from 2-999). The numbers at the end will only exist if there is more than one user with the same
fmlastname.
Windows Users who are on the EIU Domain
When Windows domain users are migrated the following will occur:
- A script will be run on the EIU Domain to rename the user.
- If the user has an Exchange Mailbox, the current primary e-mail address will be made a secondary address and the new primary e-mail address will be changed to the users Alias. This means that when sending out mail the users return address will be changed to the users new ID of fmlastname###.
- In the morning when the user is ready to login they will need to use their new ID. If they use their old ID they should get an error stating "The system could not log you on. Make sure your User name and domain are correct, and then type your password again. Letters in the passwords must be typed using the correct case."
- Upon logging on with the correct user ID, the user will be logged on and will have the same desktop that they had before. The profile from the old ID will be tied to the new ID automatically and no additional steps need to be taken.
- In this case, the profile will still point to the users former profile directory in "C:\Documents and Settings\cxxxx" if you wish to have this renamed to your new UserID so that it will read as “C:\Documents and Setting\fmlastname##” there are additional steps that will need to be taken. You can contact your ISS or the ITS Helpdesk to have this process completed.
E-Mail, Non Windows Users and Users not on the EIU Domain
If you are not a Windows user or you are a Windows user but not joined to the EIU domain the
UserID change will mainly affect your e-mail settings and access to your home directory. If you are
using Outlook Exchange there will be no changes needed. If you are using Outlook without Exchange,
Eudora, Thunderbird or other mail clients you will need to change the settings within your e-mail
client to contain your new username in the logon field as well as in the e-mail address fields.
WebMail and personal web space will require the new login ID. You will find as you go to your personal
web space that the old files listed under your old ID have been tied to the new UserID so there will be
no need for users to manually move files etc. Instructions can be found for configuring e-mail clients
and using WebMail on the help desk website.
Attention WebMail & GO (precursors to PantherMail/SquirrelMail) users
WebMail & GO do not handle the account migration very well.
If you are still using WebMail or GO, now is the time to migrate to PantherMail. We would like to be able to shut down WebMail and GO permanently at the end of the year.
Please email myname@eiu.edu for assistance with this process.
WebCT
WebCT will be converted to the new UserID scheme over Christmas break. Until Christmas break, your current UserID will continue to work. When you return for the Spring semester, you should use your new UserID as your WebCT ID. The only thing that will change is the UserID (your password should not change). All existing content -- quizzes, files, folders, grades, etc. -- should not be affected. We will make backups of all courses immediately before mass changes are made and keep them until March 1, 2006.
