The New Doudna Fine Arts Center at Eastern Illinois University

“An extraordinary, world-class, state-of-the-art, acoustical, visual, and functional complex that will inspire creative minds and spirits”

In March of 2005, construction began on the new Doudna Fine Arts Center with completion expected in Spring 2008.. The Music Department will occupy more than twice the space from the old building, approximately 76,000 square feet (and that does not include the 250-seat proscenium theatre!).

The entire complex will encompass 234,000 square feet, including:

  • Newly renovated 600-seat Dvorak Concert Hall
  • Two new performance venues:
  • 180-seat Recital Hall
  • 250-seat Proscenium Theatre with orchestra pit for opera, musical theatre, and theatre productions
  • Two new large rehearsal rooms
  • New 150-seat, high-tech, “smart” classroom
  • State-of the-art Electronic Music Studio
  • Computer technology and electronic keyboard labs
  • New Acoustic Percussion Lab
  • Digital Recording Studio with audio/video communication capabilities for all performance venues
  • 25 Wenger V-Technology practice rooms (currently in use on campus)

Quote from Antoine Predock, design architect:
“For me, probably the most spectacular visual element of this project will be the 85-foot-high main entry leading to the public concourse. The function of the public concourse will be to sequentially merge and integrate all departmental activities and discipline related functions; e.g. all classrooms, and performance, recital, and concert venues will converge into the concourse. The approximately 150-yard-long concourse will be designed with crystalline formations of colored glass, reflective glass, and clear glass and will emphasize natural light, evoking feelings of inhabiting a chandelier. This most dramatic space will be a place for celebration and encounter.”
