All Music Education concentrations share the same Music Core and Professional Course sequence as offered through the College of Education and Professional Studies. All concentrations lead to the same certification, with broad-based preparation in all areas of music education. However, each of the following concentrations has unique professional development experiences, designed to help the prospective teacher achieve his/her professional and musical goals.
– This concentration is designed for those who wish to teach primarily band and/or orchestra grades 4-12. Students will achieve basic proficiency in all traditional wind, string, and percussion instruments. Management skills for a successful instrumental music education program are emphasized. Junior Standing, and Junior and Senior Performance recitals are required.
Instumental Music Education Degree Plan
- This concentration is designed for those who wish to teach primarily vocal music grades 4-12. Students will achieve basic proficiency in general music. Vocal and choral pedagogical skills are emphasized. Management skills for a successful vocal music education program are emphasized. Junior Standing, and Junior and Senior Performance recitals are required.
Vocal Music Education Degree Plan
– This concentration is designed for those who wish to teach elementary and middle school (PreK-8) General Music. Electives are selected from Child Development, Art, Dance, Theater, and Children’s Literature. Vocal and piano skills are developed. Achievement of Junior Standing is required. Junior and Senior Performance recitals are not required.
