The Master of Arts in Mathematics

Molly Finley Accepting the Distinguished Graduate Award
Molly Finley Receiving the Distinguished Graduate Award

The Mathematics option provides a solidbackground in basic graduate-level mathematics. It prepares students for advanced graduate study, post-secondary teaching, or work in industry or government.  Our graduates have been very succesfull obtaining teaching jobs at community colleges or by following our program with a Ph.D.

Elective courses allow specialized study in areas such as pure mathematics, applied mathematics and computer sciences.

Admission Requirements:

To be admitted to the program, you must be admitted to the graduate school first.  Apply online at http://www.applyweb.com/apply/eiu/menu.html.    After being admitted to the graduate school your application will be forwarded to the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science for an admission decision.

For admission into a graduate program:

  • A bachelor's degree is required from a regionally accredited four-year college or university.
  • A minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale is required for that degree.
  • Valid documentation of an appropriate GRE (General) test score is required.
  • Approval of the department in which the degree is sought is required.

A student achieving a 2.75 GPA on the last 60 hours of graded academic work may substitute that criterion for the requirement of achieving an overall 2.75 GPA. Coursework taken as a post-baccalaureate student may be considered in the computation of the GPA.

  • Degree Requirements:

Master of Arts (Mathematics):  34 semester hours (32 if a thesis is written) of graduate level courses as approved by the Graduate Committee of the Mathematics Department. Each program must include Mathematics 5100, 5301, or 5330. If the student did not complete Mathematics 4760 and 4860 or their equivalents as an undergraduate, they must be included. The program may include up to eight semester hour of courses in related areas, and include at least 24 semester hour of courses numbered 5000 and above.

A list of graduate courses is here.

    Graduate Assistantships:

Assistantships are available for the M.A. program in Mathematics and Mathematics Education.  The M.A. Mathematics Education option is a predominantly summer program with summer assistantships available.  Please apply online at http://www.eiu.edu/~graduate/assistantships/assistantships.php
