OM 214
Abstract: The Fundamental Theorem of Algebra - that every polynomial has a root in the complex number system - may be proven from many different points of view. I would like to share the contents of a beautiful talk given by John Milnor in the '50's, which shows how the Theorem follows from the geometry of the complex plane along with some basic notions of differential topology. This talk will be understandable to anyone who knows what a complex number and a partial derivative are, and should be of interest to both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty.
