MWCBS Does Chicago (1999)

Pat Thane
The University of Chicago in Hyde Park was the site of a well-attended MWCBS this past October. There were some seventy papers, including plenaries in the rooms of the Quad Club by Patricia Thane, University of Sussex, on "The ageing of 20th-century British society: burden or benefit?" and Johann Sommerville, University of Wisconsin, Madison, on "Revisionism Revisited: Consensus and Conflict in Early Modern Britain." Julie Elb, University of Memphis, "Beauty and the feast: food and feminine identity in nineteenth century England," won a monetary award for best graduate student paper. For the complete list of papers given, see The British Studies Intelligencer 7th sers., IX, 2 (Fall 1999), http://www.nacbs.org/intelligencer/9/92.html. Kudos to Doug Bradburn and Ted Cook of the University of Chicago for superb local arrangements.
