Professor Birk is a specialist in Medieval European history, with a research focus on the Medieval Mediterranean world.

His current research,which has been presented at both national and international conferences, focus on interactions between Christians and Muslims in the Medieval Mediterranean.

His work has been published in Multicultural Europe and Cultural Exchange in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
