Department of Geology/Geography
Instructor
Les Stoner greatly enjoys teaching and last year was no
exception. On a personal note his family grew by one Dalmatian
and by Jessica Two Straws. Jessi is a horse.
In the teaching areas, Les continues to lead field trips to
various parts of the state that are enjoyed by students of all
ages. The trip to the western part of the state went to Galena
and included visiting a lead mine, the Mississippi Palisades, the City
of Galena, Grant’s Home and the business home of John Deere at Grand
Detour, Illinois. The field trip to southwestern Illinois gave
students a taste of the French connection. That field trip began
at the old Capitol at Vandalia and continued to Cahokia Mounds,
Menard’s Home, Fort De Chartres, Menard Prison, Fountain Bluff, and
Giant City State Park.
Les enjoys teaching Weather and Climate. Teaching is a challenge since
his classes have a large number of students with diverse backgrounds.
Geography of Illinois is also a fun class that he finds enjoyable and
requires constant updating. Les’ students enjoy the local flavor
of his geographic expertise.
