Sigma Gamma Epsilon (SGE)

Sigma Gamma Epsilon is a national honor society for persons in the Earth Sciences.  As such, many of our majors have qualified to become members.

Members of the honor society, with Dr. Jorstad as adviser, has been very involved in community affairs.  During the 1999 - 2000 academic year they provided seminars for the "Expanding Your Horizons Through Math and Science" conferences held on campus.  The conferences focused on 7th, 8th, and 9th grade girls and their hand-on experiences in the math and sciences.

During each fall semester (the second full week in October) SGE sponsors speakers for the annual Earth Week celebration.  Last year Drs. Pheifer and Stimac gave talks open to members of the university and the community.

Members of SGE are also very involved in helping with the Introductory Earth Sciences Fieldtrip run every semester.  This past year they visited Charleston Stone Quarry, Lake Charleston, the Westfield Oilfields, and Fox Ridge State Park.  Presenting the results of these fieldtrips earned Jennifer Wolters an award for one of the best talks at the Geological Society of America North-central Sectional meeting in Indianapolis.
