Seven Good Reasons For Carrying Student Health Insurance

1. The Student Health Insurance Plan can compliment the family health plan. It may be beneficial to carry both, particularly if the family plan has a high deductible. The Plan provides benefits at 80% after a $50.00 deductible per diagnosis, per academic year.

2. The cost of Student Health Insurance is very reasonable compared to health care costs in general.

3. The parents' HMO or PPO may only cover the student while in the home area, or may reduce benefits when the student is treated away from home. If the family plan includes that requirement, The Plan may be a good supplement for the student while at school.

4. Student Health Insurance is important when the student reaches the maximum dependent age allowed by the family plan or if the student will be dropped from the family plan anytime during a semester. HMOs and PPOs are reducing dependent age limits as a way to cut costs. The Plan does not have an age limit, and provides coverage worldwide.

5. College years are usually physically healthy ones, but they are also a time of major developmental and social transitions during which physical and mental health problems have the potential to interfere with students' lives and ambitions. The Plan can provide the additional coverage if needed.

6. Students who do not intend to enroll for summer may purchase coverage for the summer as long as they were insured under The Plan the prior spring semester. This is especially important for those students who graduate at the end of a spring semester and are no longer eligible to be covered under their family plan. The Plan can provide the EIU graduate with the additional period of coverage through the end of the summer term.

7. The Student Health Insurance fee is assessed to all eligible students enrolled for 9 on-campus hours. Most family/dependent coverage plans require the student be enrolled in 12 hours in order to qualify for their coverage.
