Welcome to
the Department of Chemistry
at Eastern Illinois University! As you peruse our web site, you’ll begin to appreciate the types of experiences we are able to offer our students. Eastern’s primary focus is on teaching and low student/faculty ratios, and our Department is no exception. Introductory class sizes range from 30-60 students, while upper division courses have enrollments closer to 10.....chemistry majors here get to know each other very well! Almost all of our majors take one or more semesters of Undergraduate Research (CHM 4400), where they work with a faculty member in the professor's own laboratory on an original research project. This is a truly wonderful experience for students and faculty alike; it brings alive students' book knowledge and stimulates interest in chemistry like no other endeavor! After graduation, most of our students go on to further their educations at chemistry, medical, dental, pharmacy, nursing, and other graduate schools. Others find employment in teaching or with environmental, forensic, industrial, or pharmaceutical companies. We do an excellent job training chemists in our little corner of the world—and we have a great time doing it. Check us out! - Doug Klarup |
