Research Interests

Our research is focused on understanding chemical processes relevant to environmental contamination and remediation.  Recent efforts have centered on reactions between chlorinated triazines and metallic iron:

Scheme

This process has potential for cost-effective pesticide degradation and spill remediation.  Solid phase extraction, HPLC, and GC-MS are used to monitor the reactions, and parallel electrochemical experiments are conducted to aid in determining probable reaction mechanisms.

Other research interests include how metal speciation in soils influences remediation processes and the distribution of phosphorous in bank sediments of the Embarras River Basin.
