HOW TO OBTAIN A NOTETAKER
If your disability entitles you to have a volunteer notetaker, the Office of Disability Services will provide you with NCR paper with which to supply your instructor or the volunteer. Your instructor is encouraged to assume the responsibility of arranging to have a fellow student take notes for you in each of your classes. If you prefer to arrange for the notetaker yourself, you may do so.
Selecting the Notetaker:
You should obtain a notetaker on the first day of class. There are a variety of ways to do this, including the following:
1. Inform the instructor that you need a notetaker. Perhaps the instructor will be able to recommend a good student in this class or will make an announcement for you when class begins.
2. Request permission from the instructor for you to make the announcement at the beginning of class. Suggested statement: "I would like to request a volunteer to use carbonless paper to make a copy of their class notes. I will supply the paper and all you need to do is insert it in your own notebook."
3. Ask someone in the class who you know is reliable and has good notetaking skills to be your volunteer notetaker.
If more than one student volunteers, it would be a good idea to select two and supply them both with NCR paper. Review each set of notes for a period of about a week, then select the one with whose notes you feel most comfortable. You or the instructor could ask the other volunteer to be your substitute in the event that the notetaker is absent from class.
Always make sure the notetaker has enough NCR paper. Your notetaker is not obliged to obtain this paper on your behalf or to pay copy fees for your notes. This is your responsibility.
Remember to collect your notes from the instructor or the notetaker at the end of each class.
Class Absences:
Your notetaker is not obliged to take your class notes if you miss class.
One Last Suggestion:
Ask the instructor to review the notes for accuracy and consistency. Do this early in the semester, preferably within the first two weeks of class. You may wish to request this periodically throughout the semester.
