Library Workshops - Fall 2005

Library Services traditionally offers technology workshops each semester. All workshops are free of charge. Workshops will be offered in our e-classroom, room 4450, on the 4000 level of Booth Library. Each session is limited to 24 participants and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Description: Booth Library Reference Librarians will provide instruction on how to search the online catalog and databases.  New databases will be highlighted. You will learn how to locate reliable and scholarly information for course assignments and research projects. Information on how to request materials from other libraries is also included.
Target Audience: Anyone wishing to learn about library resources and improve their searching techniques.

MS Excel 2003 - Beginner I

Description: A workshop covering the basic spreadsheet features of Excel XP. Participants will build a simple spreadsheet.
Target Audience: Anyone new to Excel

Description: A workshop in Excel XP discussing customizing the work area. Participants will both create spreadsheet templates and work with pre-made spreadsheets.  Also, sharing information and graphics between Office XP applications such as MS Word, MS Access, and MS PowerPoint.

Description:  An increasingly popular software program and a part of the Microsoft Office XP suite, PowerPoint is used to create computer-based presentations. PowerPoint enables you to create electronic presentations that include text, graphics, pictures, sound, and video. This workshop will introduce participants to PowerPoint and how it can be used to deliver class lectures and conference presentations. Topics covered include the AutoContent Wizard, design templates, the PowerPoint interface. Learn how to insert, format, and move text, layouts, and graphics. Bring a floppy or zip disk to save your work.
Target Audience: Anyone wanting to create a PowerPoint presentation.

Description: This PowerPoint XP workshop will show participants how to create your own unique design template and save it.  Work with adding animation, transitions, draw tools, sound, and video to your presentation.  Learn how to save and publish your presentation to the web. 
Bring a floppy or zip disk to save your work.
Target Audience: Anyone knowing PowerPoint vasics.

Description: The advanced session of PowerPoint XP will cover grouping graphics, creating master slides, adding interactive components, printing options, considerations when using different versions, and packing a presentation.  Bring a floppy disk or zip disk to save the presentation you create during this session.

MS Word 2003 - Beginning I

Date/Time: Wednesday, September 28, 2005, 2-4 pm

Description:  Beginning I explores the program concentrating on the Word interface, using the mouse to get around, how to navigate dialog boxes, menus, and toolbars.
Target Audience: Anyone new to Microsoft Word
Expertise Level:  Beginner

Learn the Windows interface features.
Explore the toolbars and menus in Word.

MS Word 2003 - Beginning II

Description:  Beginning II explores finding and opening multiple documents, how to use templates, applying formats and styles, using the spell check and grammar check features, editing your document with cut and paste, and creating headers and footers.
Target Audience:  Anyone new to Microsoft Word.

Description: Learn the basics of Microsoft's newest operating system, Windows XP.  In this workshop you'll learn what has changed and where your favorite applications and tools have moved too.  Be sure to sign up for this first in a series of workshops covering the new Windows XP.

Creating Web Pages with Netscape Composer - Introduction

Dates/Times: Friday, October 21, 2005, 9-11 am

Description: This workshop starts with professional tips on Web Design.  Learners will then create a web page with Netscape Composer.  Learn to add and format text, bullets, lists, lines, and tables. Practice inserting pictures, links, targets and mailto buttons. Give your page an interesting background. Bring a zip disk or flash drive to save your files and bring your server name and log in information.  E-mail  Sandy if you have questions. 
Target Audience: Persons interested in making simple web pages without learning the HTML language. 
Expertise Level: Beginner 
Learning Objectives
Learners will create text, tables, and insert graphics in a web page.

Creating Web Pages with Netscape Composer - Intermediate

Description: This workshop continues with saving your web page.  Finding your server space and posting your page and files.  The last step is to edit your page.  Bring a zip disk or flash drive to save your files and bring your server name and log-in information.  E-mail  Sandy if you have questions. 
Target Audience: Persons interested in making simple web pages without learning the HTML language. 
Expertise Level: Should take the Intro class. 
Learn the necessary steps needed to save and upload pages to the WWW. 
Go back and update the pages on your website. 
How to tag your page so others may find it. 


SPAM: Reduce Your Junk E-Mail

Date/Time: Monday, October 17, 2005, 3-5 pm

Description: You love the ease of E-mail, but you despise the thought of trudging through the junk mail flooding your Inbox.  This workshop will show you how to control and reduce the amount of SPAM appearing in your E-mail.  Learn how SPAMMERS work, how to filter out unwanted messages, keep your name off these lists, and what the Government is doing to curb the annoying trend.  Also, learn what to do and what NOT to do when you spot junk mail sitting in your Inbox.  You will leave surprised by what you learn.
