The Academy of Lifetime Learning (ALL) is a new program for retired learners in the Eastern Illinois University area. The goal of ALL is to provide non-credit academic short programs at a reasonable cost as well as opportunities for the development of relationships and networks among the retired community.

Summer 2009 Courses
Nostalgic Planters *Learn the guidelines for container gardening, which annuals to select, and how to plant them. Gain ideas for location and care. During the hands-on class you will build your own container to take home for display on your porch or patio or to give your mother or grandmother for Mother’s day. Participants are asked to bring a nostalgic container and enough potting soil to fill. Use your imagination -- watering can, boot, wash tub, wheel barrow –any will work. Make sure the container has been cleaned with a 10% bleach solution and has some drain holes. Plants will be furnished.

Tai Chi for Older Adults *
Participating in Tai Chi can help with balance, flexibility, stress reduction and increasing energy levels. Making Dough with Grandkids*Spend time together in the kitchen making yeast breads. Learn some of the basic techniques of mixing and shaping the dough. We will be making sweet rolls and dinner rolls during the afternoon. There will be time for tasting at the end of the session and you will have dough to take home and shape on your own. Each grandparent/grandchild team should bring a large mixing bowl (1 gallon or larger) or two smaller ones, for mixing and taking the dough home. Other equipment will be provided. Aprons are optional—we’ll be working with lots of flour, so you may want to protect your clothing.

Gardening with Grandkids *
A super hands-on, make it and take it workshop! Interact with your grandparent/grandchild with loads of fun activities: construct a miniature water garden, create an outdoor tic-tac-toe game for the garden, plant a secret garden in a jar terrarium, learn how to recycle kitchen/garden waste into “black gold”, create musical wind chimes, snack on garden yummies, and more.
